Why the old town of Maine’s Top Dawg Tavern is closing

Top Dawgs Tavern is getting out of the old-timey tavern business and into the big city.

The iconic bar on Old Town Mall is closing its doors to the public on Tuesday.

The bar was founded in 1871 and is the oldest continuously operating restaurant in Maine, according to the city of Portland.

The restaurant’s owner, Matt Top, told the Portland Press Herald the bar is in a “very difficult” financial position, but he doesn’t believe it will be the last restaurant in the Old Town district.

He says the restaurant is “not in the bottom” financially, but the restaurant has been struggling.

The bar was established in 1872 and has been open since the 1920s.

It has two full-service restaurants, a full bar and a beer garden.

It’s been a fixture in the Portland community since at least 1890.

Top said the bar will close for good in 2018.

The last of the Top Dawgz Taverns will be open at 11 p.m.

Tuesdays through Saturdays.

Top says he is planning to open his own bar in the city, but will keep the bar’s current name.
